How To Get Money For Your Old Gadgets
We all have many old phones, digital cameras, and MP3 players just sitting in a drawer.
A new site called SecondRotation will pay you for your old stuff.
SecondRotation will take practically every brand of cell phone, digital camera, gaming console, GPS device, and MP3 player (including iPods and iPhones, but not any that are bricked, unfortunately for Mike).
What do they do with your stuff? you ask... they sell it on eBay.
The process is much simpler than selling items yourself on eBay, but of course it's based on the premise that Second Rotation will be able to sell your stuff for more than it's paying you. That's the price of convenience.
How it works:
- Estimate It! -Use the online step-by-step pricing guide to locate your gadget and find out what it's worth.
- Ship It! - Shipping your couldn't be easier. From within the continental United States simply pack it up and SecondRotation will pick it up. And it's free. To ship your gadget from outside of the continental United States, just use your preferred shipping service provider.
- Cash It In! -Get paid as soon as SecondRotation gets your gadget, and confirms its condition. It's that simple.
For a quick overview of the site, take a look at the following c|net video:

BookTagger: Your Online Book Club
The other day, a friend of mine made me realize that the blog, which is supposed to be about tools for business and PERSONAL use; was focused more on the business side.
So I'm going to try and rectify the situation, starting with BookTagger - a type of social network for book lovers.
BookTagger started , with a woman, Rebecca, an avid reader and internet addict, who could not find a free and appealing service on the internet where she could store memories of books and share them easily with family and friends.
Inspired by her, her friend went on to create BookTagger.
Each BookTagger profile is a graphical representation of your physical bookshelf on the internet.
The bookshelf can then be shared with friends, family and others searching for the next good read.
It can also be used to catalogue all your books and track to whom they've been lent.
With BookTagger you can:
- Discover books to read by browsing others' bookshelves
- List the books you've read and want to read
- Find people with similar reading tastes
- Keep track of books you lend
- Create book lists (scariest, funniest and best)
- Build an online book club
- Review the books you've read
- Order books
- Sign up - it's FREE and easy
- Add books - Add books you've read, or those you want to
- Discuss your books - find people who like the same books as you

How To Get 250 Business Cards For Free
Previously, I have posted about getting a professional e-mail as one of the basic, must-haves for people starting a new business.
Today we'll cover the second item I mentioned -- how to get FREE business cards.
There are several offers on the web for free or semi-free business cards. Usually though, at the end of a lengthy sign up and selection process, you find out that there's some catch.
So here's what I learned the "hard" way.
The biggest and most reliable player online today is VistaPrint.
VistaPrint is a publicly traded company (NASDAQ: VPRT), with annual sales of over $375 million (Jun 08 analysts est) and a market cap of $1.78 Billion. In other words - they are here to stay.
They have a standing "Free Business Cards" offering, that will get you 250 free business cards. You do have to pay $5.25 for standard shipping that takes about 2 weeks to arrive (there are faster shipping options for extra charge).
That comes down to $5.25 for 250 business cards ==> which is still a BARGAIN.
The Catch
The free cards have a "Business Cards are FREE at www.vistaprint.com!" logo on the back.
Even with the logo it's a great deal for amateur endeavors, small businesses and personal consulting firms, or if you just need a personal card (highly recommended).
For $3.99 more they'll do away with the logo.
How it works
Basically you will go to a design screen and fill in the blanks with your own information - use only the lines you want or need.
If you use one of their free designs and the text size and font (i.e. do not customize any type, size, or design) then the cards are free. If you customize, then you pay a little more.
Here's what the screen looks like:

So, if you're starting a new business, or just tired of writing down your email and phone numbers, head over to VistaPrint and get yours.
Disclosure:
VistaPrint offers a refer-a-friend program. So if you click on my links and end up spending money with them - I will get 1 VistaCash credit for every $1 you spend.

Flying? Pinpoint The Best Time To Buy Your Ticket With Yapta
Fact: Airlines always change their prices!
Why? Because they try to maximize the revenue they make on each flight, so they use sophisticated "yield management" tools to optimize for the number of seats sold and the price per seat.
In fact, the average ticket price fluctuates by as much as 400% (four hundred).
So knowing when to buy could save you a LOT of money (much more if the whole family is traveling).
Luckily Yapta, a new and FREE service, now helps you buy tickets when prices drop.
Using Yapta is easy. Simply choose flights you're interested in, and Yapta will begin tracking prices for you.
Yapta will notify you via email whenever the price drops or when it drops below a specific price point that you can set.
Already purchased a ticket? You may qualify for vouchers or refunds!
Guaranteed Airfare Rules entitle you to rebook if a lower fare is available - you get the difference as a credit for future travel. Simply add your ticket information.
Yapta will email you if the price drops below what you paid, making you eligible for a voucher or refund from the airline.
Yapta has been saving money for people on air travel since May 2006 and claims to have sent $8 Million in potential savings.
I guess this is why the press and its users love it.
Give it a try and let me know what you thought.

One In Every Ten Hard Drives Fail Each Year. Are You Ready?
Chances are you have a lot of important stuff on your computer like financial documents, email, digital photos, music and more.
Unfortunately, computers are vulnerable to hard drive crashes, virus attacks, theft and natural disasters, which can erase everything in an instant.
Just like flossing and exercising, we KNOW we need to do it; but we it's just hard to keep doing it EVERY day.
So...an ideal backup solution should:
-
Not require you to think about backup.
Backup should be set up once, and then work automatically. -
Keep your files encrypted.
Your backup files should be encrypted and stored in a secure, remote location that's only accessible to you — from anywhere. -
Be smart.
Your backup system should be smart enough to only back up data that's not already been backed up, only back up parts of a file that have changed, and be able to back up open and locked files.
Founded in 2005, Mozy is an EMC company that offers an award wining, automatic, remote backup solution.
Backup your photos, music Outlook files and other important data in 3 easy steps:
- Sign up for an account - Create a user account which will allow you to download the MozyHome software. Its quick and easy, with a step-by-step instructions to guide you through the process.
- Download and install software - It downloads in just seconds, and the installation is simple and fast.
- Select files to be backed up - Simply check the boxes next to the backup sets, or types of files you want to back up, and MozyHome does the rest.
MozyHome works on both PC and Mac computers and includes some very smart and powerful features:- Open/locked file support: Back up your documents whether they're open or closed.
- 128-bit SSL encryption: The same technology used by banks secures your data during the backup process.
- 448-bit Blowfish encryption: Secures your files while in storage, providing peace of mind that your private data is safe from hackers.
- Automatic: Schedule the times to back up and MozyHome does the rest.
- New and changed file detection: MozyHome finds and saves the smallest changes.
- Backs up Outlook files: Disaster-proof email protection.
- Block-level incremental backup: After the initial backup, MozyHome only backs up files that have been added or changed, making subsequent backups lightning fast.
If you need more space, their Unlimited Backup plan costs a measly $4.95 a month.
They also offer MozyPro for business users.
Or...you can go with one of the alternatives:
- Do nothing and don't worry about backup. (also try closing your eyes, plugging your ears and repeating "I'm in my happy place, I'm in my happy place.")
- Burn a new CD or DVD every Sunday night and store it at your brother-in-law's office.
- Buy a $200 external hard drive and hope your office doesn't burn down.
- Run a cron job of rsync, gzip and mcrypt piped over ssh to your friend's server over his DSL line.

Easy, Fast And Free Conference Calling And Recording
Teleconferencing used to be an expensive activity, and as such reserved for business use.
With the introduction of FREE, conferencing can now be enjoyed by small business, families, clubs, schools or just just friends.
Today we'll cover Basement Ventures.
Background:
Basement Ventures used to provide and support the highly praised, free conference calling services for LiveOffice Conferencing (not to be confused with Microsoft’s Office Live).
It seems that the relationship has gone sour (I will try to get more information from the company), and that the parties have parted way.
LiveOffice now provides paid, toll-free services, while Basement Ventures retained the FREE service that we'll cover here.
The Service:
on-demand, FREE conference calling is available anytime—no advance notice or conference call details are required. You can use it from anywhere with a 250-person capacity and up to six hours of conference time for each call.
Use your name and email to create a free conference call account in seconds. After that, whenever you choose, everybody calls in, punches in the code, and that's it -- a free conference call!
The sound is great and there are a ton of cool features.
Conference Recording:
Recording is EASY: at any time, you can press 5* to begin recording the conference.
The recordings are available online within 90 minutes of your conference call concluding (and will remain available for a minimum of 30 days).
Once your free conference call is recorded, you can download the mp3 file, post it to a website or email, setup podcasts and provide public access from our website with almost no technical skills needed.
There are many cool uses for that feature:
- Save and store conference call recordings to your PC and play them back on your computer or in most popular music players
- Post your conference calls, teleseminars and recorded audio presentations online anytime
- Allow access to your conference call recordings, so invited guests who are unable to attend the conference call during the scheduled time are still able to review the content and information exchanged
- Podcast your conference call content. Record, publish and listen to a podcast almost instantly. Once you’ve setup the link to your podcasting software, you and your colleagues can download the most up-to-date recordings quickly and easily online

Price Protectr - Get Your Money Back!
There are lots of stores out there that offer price protection policies -- when the price drops on an item you've purchased, they'll refund you the difference.
But there's a catch... it's up to you to watch prices.
Price Protectr makes it simple to keep track of your purchases and get your money back.
How does it work?
- Buy something from one of 70 supported stores including Amazon, The Apple Store, Best Buy, Circuit City, Costco, Future Shop, Sears and Staples
- Submit the product information page for the item you just bought (the page where you can add it to your shopping cart)
- enter your email address
- Sit back and relax
If the price drop any time within the price protection period, they'll send an email your way (and they'll keep sending them if the price keeps dropping).
It's free. It's easy.
It's free and easy money.
How often do you get that offer?

Car Maintenance 2.0 - Love Your Car The Geek Way
We all know that a well-maintained car is a happy car.
It is safer, more dependable and will actually be worth more when it is time for you to sell it or trade it in.
But a car needs more than just the occasional oil change. Tire rotations, brake service, new timing belts, and tune-ups are just some of the many services necessary to keep it running smoothly and safely.
Do you know when these services need to be performed? If your answer is "no" then you're like me. So keep on reading.
ServiceBeacon, a new and FREE website, promises to solve all this:
- It will remind you when it is time for service and what specific service your car needs.
- It enables you to easily keep your service history and records up to date in electronic form (no more little pieces of paper in your glove compartment)
- Book exactly the service your car needs online with your dealer via ServiceBeacon, or use the service printout option so that you can bring your requirements with you
How it works:
The first thing you will have to do is tell ServiceBeacon what kind of car you want to add along with its current mileage.
Once you add your car, you will be asked to pick a default dealership or service provider where you expect to service the car – this is likely where you bought your car but it does not have to be.
Once your car is created, you will have the ability to view your car's service schedule as well as create service orders based on that schedule.
If a recall (or recalls) is issued against your car, you will get notified and they will also be added to your service schedule in the recalls area.
Every month you will receive an email letting you know how many service items are coming due and when. The schedule is based on what ServiceBeacon estimates is your current mileage. If a recall has been issued, you will see it listed as well.
Once you are ready to book your service, you can email your newly created order to your dealer or service provider.
No more calling and having to explain who you are and what needs to be done — your service order lays it all out clearly for them.
ServiceBeacon saves all your car's service history online for easy access anytime.
A central, electronic history is much more convenient and organized than having all the service history on invoices in your glove compartment or spread out across every service provider and garage you ever serviced your car at.
This is a great way to show a prospective buyer what service has been done on your car.
Also:
- If you ever sell your car you can transfer your car's service history to the new owner.
- You can track and get alerts for as many cars as you like. There is no limit.
- If you own the car but do not typically drive it or service it (e.g. your spouse drives the car and would normally take it in for service), you can have a service reminder email go out to them as well as you.
To love your car 2.0 style - sign up for free here.

How To Copy Your DVDs In 3 Easy Steps
This guide will show you how to copy your DVDs in 3 easy steps.
Before we start -- is it legal?
Since the issue is still being litigated, it is unclear whether it's legal or illegal. Though there is a small theoretical risk of criminal prosecution under the DMCA, the movie and recording industries typically pursue commercial users rather than consumers.
So, if you're game let's begin.
Like the title says, copying DVDs involves 3 steps: Decrypt, Shrink and Burn.
- Decrypt - making sure the DVD is readable and ready to be processed and "shrinked"
- Shrink - compressing the DVD data to the standard 4.7 gigs, which will allow you to use a standard DVD instead of having to buy expensive double-density blank DVDs. You will rarely, if ever, notice any decrease in video quality
- Burn - creating the new DVD using your DVD burner
Step 1: Decrypt
The easiest way to decrypt a DVD is by using DVD43. It is a program that runs in the background and decrypts copy-protected DVD’s on the fly. It has the effect of making a DVD unrestricted and region free, allowing other programs to access and process it. It will also remove audio CD protection. After installation, DVD43 will run in the background and show itself as a yellow smiley in your system tray. Once you insert a DVD into your drive it will take a few seconds to recognize it and then will change to a green smiley, indicating that it has successfully removed the protection.
For the latest version go to the program site.
Step 2: Shrink
We will use DVD Shrink to make our DVD "fit" into a standard 4.7-gig DVD.DVD Shrink allows you to choose which parts of the programs you want to include. For example - you can decide to keep only the main title and get rid of bonus features, audio data for languages that you do not want, previews, etc. (of course, you can also choose to include everything).
Once you've decided what to include in your new DVD, DVD Shrink will "compress" everything, creating an ISO file (a disc image) that will fit into a standard 4.7-gig DVD.
Download DVD Shrink v.3.2.0.15 here. Please read this scam alert about fake DVD Shrink sites.
Now, all we have to do is --
Step 3: Burn
Although DVD Shrink can burn the resulting DVD image by integrating with Nero (if you have it installed), I prefer to use Imgburn.Imgburn is a lightweight, simple program that does one thing very well -- burn any image file into a DVD (or CD for that matter).
You can download the program here.
That's it. With these simple and FREE tools you should be able to handle most of your DVDs. Every once-in-a-while you may come across a DVD with a realy strong encryption that DVD43 can't handle.
I will be posting about how to handle this in future posts. If you need it sooner, just leave a comment and I will help.

The Art Of Writing
One of the main reasons I host this blog is to "exercise" my writing skills. Much like working out, if you don't use it, you loose it. So you have to keep working it.
But some people just seem to "have it".
One of the blogs I follow for Linux related stuff is - distrogue.blogspot.com
There's a lot of interesting and useful information, packaged in an easy-to-read, conversational style.
The host, DJ Gentoo, has definitely "found his voice".
His last post, an op-ed on content stealing in the blogosphere - was a pleasure to read and made me wish I could write like that one day.
Not bad for a high-school student.
If you enjoy reading well written pieces (and Linux, of course) you should add distrogue.blogspot.com to your list.

It is the must-make first step towards projecting a serious, professional image (next you'll need business cards and a website, but will cover those in future posts).
It is ABSOLUTELY NOT acceptable to use a personal email address like john.smith@cablecompany.com or john.smith@hotmail.com.
Fortunately, Google now offers a robust and flexible Business Suite for FREE -- Google Apps.
With Google Apps you, and anyone you want, can have that professional email. Accessing and managing your email, is done exactly the same way as in Gmail. In fact, it's like having a private Gmail for your company.
Google Apps includes more than just an email (such as shared calendar, shared and hosted docs and spreadsheets and more), but I'll focus this post on the email.
Features:
- It's all hosted by Google, so there's no hardware or software to download, install or maintain. You can get up and running quickly, even if you don't have an IT staff, and if you don't have an internet domain yet, they can even help you register one.
- Email storage - +5 GB / account
- No preset user account limit
- Mobile access (VERY cool)
- Administrator control pane
- Online support resources
- Other Free apllications included - Google Talk, Google Calendar, Docs & Spreadsheets, Page Creator and Start Page
So, if you're into - zero cost, big storage and hassle free usage - then you should take a look at Google Apps.

Send a Fax For Free With FaxZero

If you only need to send out a fax every now and again -- consider free outgoing internet fax service FaxZero
It's free and lets you send a PDF or Word document to any fax number in the USA.
FaxZero prints an ad on the coversheet, but leaves the main pages uncorrupted (Ad-free faxes are about two bucks).
You're limited to 2 free 3-page faxes a day, and your file attachment size limit is 10MB. The ad, while not something you'd like on professional business faxes, isn't too bad - oh, and the cover sheet with the ad doesn't count toward your 3 page limit.

Free Giveaway: The Last (GrandCentral) Phone Number You'll Ever Need
*************Update *********************************************
GrandCentral (owned by Google) just announced the availability of new GrandCentral accounts to Blogger (also owned by Google) users. Now, you can sign up for a free GrandCentral account.
You can also sign up for a FREE Blogger account.
*******************************************************************
Although GrandCentral doesn't replace your phones (at least not yet) -- it can replace all the different phone numbers in your life. Both professional and personal.
GrandCentral links all the different numbers together and helps them do more.
The result -- One Number...for LifeTM - a number that's not tied to a phone or a location - but tied to you.
This also gives you the freedom to switch service providers as often as you want. Your GrandCentral number, the number everyone uses to call you, stays the same.
What else can you do with GrandCentral?
- Check your messages by phone, email, or online
- Keep all your messages online for eternity
- Record and store your phone calls (just like voicemail)
- Quickly (and secretly) block an annoying caller
- Click-to-dial from your address book
- Surprise your callers with a custom voicemail greeting
- Forward, download, and add notes to your messages
Lifehacker has an excellent ScreenShot Tour about GrandCentral and how it works.
Where do I start?
GrandCentral was acquired by Google and is still in closed beta (which means that for now, you need an invitation to join the service. You can sign up for an invitation here).
The good news is that I have several invitation left and will be giving them out over the coming weeks.
So...if you would like an invite just write a comment and let me know. I'll announce the winner next week.
