A Free WebEx Alternative

If you have remote friends, colleagues or clients odds are you are familiar with WeEx - the remote collaboration tool, now owned by Cisco.

Although it's a very good product; it has two drawbacks:

  • it requires participants to perform an install on their machine (which they seem to always postpone to AFTER the meeting begins) and...
  • it is pretty expensive (plans start at $39/month)
Dimdim is a FREE web conferencing service where you can share your desktop, show slides, collaborate, chat, talk and broadcast via webcam with absolutely NO download required for attendees.

Dimdim is extremely easy to use. It has a very simple user interface, and is designed so the people you invite to your meeting do not have to install anything (even to broadcast audio or video!) A single click starts your meeting.

Dimdim’s built-in VoIP capability is great for attendees with limited access to quality phone service, providing free calling to and from any computer with a microphone and an Internet connection.

With no software to download or install, Dimdim democratizes web- based live meetings. In seconds - right from your browser - you easily host or attend web meetings complete with audio and video conferencing, screen and application sharing.

You can read more about DimDim and the people behind it; or simply signup for a FREE account.

I prefer ShowMyPC over DimDim but personally I use Techinline (www.techinline.com) which I find to be much smoother

Hi

If you need to be professional - don't go for the free ones. We subscribed to dimdim paid expecting more - the system was slow and our viewers were not synchronized to our presentation. We emailed dimdim 3 times and tried to contact them on skype..no reply...don't care.

Webex seems best....they force you to do things their way though...as long as you can put up with them being inflexible and not very client centred, the technology itself is the best I have seen

I want to suggest you try http://www.showdocument.com - its an alternative tool for dimdim that allows document sharing and Free Web meeting in real-time. all the participants in the session see each others' drawing, highlights, etc. It is free and requires no installation.

Take a look at RHUB's approach --- Web Conferencing Appliance (http://www.rhubcom.com). It is a Webex in a Box.
